They come from nowhere and stay with you, it seems like forever. They can as well be attracted by just a small slice of the apple of a few cherries you’ve left on the table and can disturb you for long days and nights. What are we talking about? Say hello to fruit flies. You’ve probably seen them not once and not twice in your life and they are nothing but disturbing your life and cooking. What can you do to get rid of fruit flies? What methods are the most effective? Find out in our short guide.
Fruit flies – where do they come from?
Do fruit flies come from any fruits? No – of course, they do not grow up inside the fruit, but rather gather around some fruits that are exposed out of the fridge or drawers. What else helps fruit flies in “going strong”? If there are many fruits or fruit juices around, if the temperature is pleasant for them (not too cold but also not too hot), if they simply have an amazing environment to grow… and disturb you. Any “sweet stains” made of jams or juices are fruit flies’ friends.
Getting rid of fruit flies is one of these things that is easier said than done – especially if they grow their population really quickly, and it is hard to coordinate and recognize where the problem came from. Fruit flies can be extremely disturbing especially during summer when warm conditions help them grow and repopulate.

Fruit flies – how to get rid of them?
Getting rid of fruit flies is not the easiest nut to crack and sometimes can take you ages before you actually see no more fruit flies in your surroundings. Sometimes even if you think that you got rid of this problem, it turns out that it is only the beginning!
What are some of the best methods of getting rid of fruit flies?
- you can use some strong scents to get rid of fruit flies. They do not like the smell of citronella (lemon) or lavender, however, sometimes it may turn out not to be enough when it comes to eliminating the problem from your house and flat.
- of course, it goes without saying, but you should remove anything that could attract currently existing fruit flies or these that may come in no time to your house. If you keep any fruits out of the fridge, or there are some loosely put jars of jams or boxes of juices, double-check if they are locked in the right way. Remove some bits or fruits that may be in your kitchen.
- you can create a special trap for fruit flies. Use apple vinegar for it – pour around a hundred millilitres of apple vinegar onto the bowl and leave it in the kitchen. Fruit flies will fly over, being attracted by a sweet apple smell, but then they will simply sink in the deadly vinegar mixture.
- you also can buy some ready-to-use chemical traps, however, they may turn out to be quite dangerous for people… and your food, so before you purchase one check if it is the best solution for you. It may not remove the problem, anyway.
We hope that you will win your fight with fruit flies. We keep our fingers crossed for you, remember that the results come in time!
